The best AI cover letter tools (2026)

We ran 12 tools through a real job. Only two actually generate a letter with no account and no card — and they could not be more different. Scores below follow our four-dimension method; anything we could not test end to end gets no score, only a status.

Why some tools have no score. LetterBench's one rule: a score requires hands-on testing, and we only publish what we verified ourselves. Tools we could not test end to end — because of a paid plan, an account requirement, or an issue in our region — are listed without scores. Free tiers, paid plans and access notes for every tool are on the pricing & access page; scores will be added as we finish each test.

The ranked tools

CoverCraft

8.8 / 10 · Scored

Free 1 scored letter/day, no sign-up. Fact-checked output, reads the JD, flags unsourced company claims. Our own product — disclosed in the review.

FreeToolr

4.0 / 10 · Scored

Free, unlimited, instant — but invented the candidate's experience ("5 years") and data ("25%"), and never read the job description.

How the rankings work

Each scored tool gets 1–10 across four weighted dimensions — output quality (40%), ATS compatibility (25%), value for money (20%), and ease of use (15%). The full method, including our honesty rules, is on the methodology page. Head-to-head detail for our two scored tools is on the compare page.
